Implementation of "Aqueduct" Project

Implementation of the "Aqueduct" project - Stabilization of inclined and damaged pillars. The implementation of the Conservation-restoration project "Aqueduct" in Skopje is a priority in the program work of NI Conservation Centre Skopje. This project is approached with enormous care during implementation, especially when it comes to significant cultural heritage, a structure that has been largely devastated. Today, trial installation of steel ties began on the most critical pillars in the visible openings where wooden beams existed and served as transverse ties. The space between the new ties and the stone is planned to be filled with authentic material and mortar injection of the same quality as the existing one. The steel ties aim to tighten the pillar through a system of profiles with nuts that will form a ring around the plane. This process of stabilizing the pillars is inevitable because the next phase is the installation of micropiles under the foundations of the inclined and most damaged pillars related to the insufficient bearing capacity of the clay under the foundations, as well as the occurrence of deformation caused by swelling of this soil layer, a phenomenon caused by the enormous water in the form of a small lake in the past which had no natural outlet into the Serava River. For that purpose, an excavation was made i.e. a drainage channel with an outlet towards the Serava River.
